The Tour de France in Barcelonnette in 2024

The Tour de France is back on the roads of the Ubaye Valley.
On Thursday 18 July, Barcelonnette will host the finish of the 18th stage of the 111th Tour de France.
On Friday 19 July, the 19th stage of the biggest cycle race of the year will pass through the Ubaye Valley via the Col de Vars and the Col de la Bonette.

Barcelonnette welcomes the Tour de France on 18 July 2024

6 years after its last visit to Ubaye, the Tour de France is making a comeback in the Barcelonnette Valley.

The Tour is returning to the Ubaye Valley in the best possible way: not one but two exciting stages await the heroes of the Grande Boucle.

It is with pride and enthusiasm that Ubaye will welcome the 111th edition of the Tour for two unforgettable days of celebration.

On 18 July, the 18th stage will start from Gap, the capital of the Hautes-Alpes, and finish at Place Aimé Gassier in Barcelonnette.

The following day, on the 19th stage from Embrun to Isola 2000, the riders will once again cross the sumptuous landscapes of Ubay and the formidable terrain of the Southern Alps. The peloton will have the chance to take on two of Ubaye's legendary passes: the Col de Vars and the Col de la Bonette!

Two unforgettable days during which you can follow the pace of the peloton. A unique opportunity to experience the world's greatest cycling competition!

The peloton returns to Ubaye on 19 July

The following day, for the 19th stage from Embrun to Isola 2000, the riders will once again cross the sumptuous Ubaye landscapes and the formidable terrain of the Southern Alps. The peloton will take on two legendary passes in Ubaye: the Col de Vars and the Col de la Bonette!

Two unforgettable days during which you'll be able to follow the pace of the peloton. A unique opportunity to experience the greatest cycling competition in the world!

Ubaye and the Tour : a long history

The Tour de France and the Ubaye valley share a long history. As early as 1911, the racers set off up the laces of the Col d'Allos.

The Vallée de l'Ubaye has a long history of cycling and has seen some of the greatest champions in the history of cycling compete more than 50 times on its legendary roads and passes.

A few dates

1975: Pra Loup is the finish of the 15th stage, which started in Nice. This legendary stage saw Bernard Thévenet put an end to the reign of Eddy Merckx "the cannibal".

1975: Barcelonnette is the starting town for the 16th stage of the Tour, bound for Serre-Chevalier.

1980: Pra Loup is the finish of the 16th stage, from Trets

2008: Jausiers is the finish of the 16th stage, from Cuneo

2015 : Pra Loup is the finish of the 17th stage, from Digne-les-Bains

2018: The Tour de France passes through Ubaye for the last time on the 18th stage between Embrun and Valloire.

Road cycling

A stage on the famous Route des Grandes Alpes®, the Vallée de l'Ubaye has long been a favourite with cycling enthusiasts.

The unique geography of the Vallée de l'Ubaye, with its seven road passes, makes it an exceptional cycling area. All different, and almost shaped for cycling, they are emblematic: Pontis (1301m), Fillys (1322m), Saint-Jean (1333m), Vars (2109m), Allos (2250m), Cayolle (2326m) and the legendary Restefond la Bonette culminating at 2802 metres. You too can follow in the footsteps of the champions on the Ubaye passes!

Mountain biking and gravel

The Ubaye Valley can also be explored by mountain bike.

With more than 340km of signposted routes approved by the French Cycling Federation, including a 106km single track linking the Col de Larche to Lake Serre-Ponçon (the Transubayenne), the area around Barcelonnette is full of exceptional routes for mountain biking and gravel.

From winding paths through the woods, wide rolling tracks on the mountainside, to technical routes along the ridges, Ubaye invites you to discover some of the finest mountain bike trails in the Southern Alps.

DH and bike parks

For adrenalin-seekers, the Pra Loup and Le Sauze bike parks offer a wide variety of fun trails in an exceptional setting.

From rolling DH tracks to technical descents, amateur and professional riders alike will find the gradient to suit them as they hurtle down the slopes.
